How to Make an Augmented Reality (AR) Comics
In this course, we will learn how to make a comic strip come to life with augmented reality. This course is for intermediate creators. Anyone that is familiar with the Unity game engine as well as the core elements of making a comic strip. You don’t have to be an expert by any means, but it is good to be familiar with the digital art making process. This is the third part in my comic making series where we learned how to make comics for print and the web. In the course, we will take one of the comics we made in part 2 of the series and we will augment it using animation, 3D models, sounds, and other digital elements. We will explore a variety of techniques that I use to make augmented reality comics for my personal projects and for clients. Augmented reality is a great way to enhance the comic you make and it is an innovative way to integrate animation into your art making practice. At the end of this course, you will have a comic that you read like a regular comic, watch like a video, and hear like an audio book. With augmented reality, you can create something so immersive it will literally change the way you see comics moving forward. More importantly, this course will give you a glimpse of the potential impact emerging technology can have on print media specifically comics. Again my name Is Steven Christian and I am excited to take you on this fun filled journey of learning how to augment a comic.
Projects include:
1. Creating a roadmap of the augmentations you want to add to your comic

Create custom animation to bring the comic to life
What are augmented reality comics?
Augmented reality (AR) comics are comics that use AR technology to enhance the reading experience by adding interactive elements such as animation, 3D models, sounds, and other digital elements to the comic. These interactive elements can be accessed using a smartphone or other device equipped with an AR app, which allows the reader to view the comic in a way that is similar to traditional print comics, but with additional digital elements overlaid on top.
AR comics can be created using specialized software such as Unity and Vuforia, which allow creators to design and integrate the AR elements into the comic. These elements can be triggered by specific elements within the comic, such as characters or objects, and can provide a more immersive and interactive reading experience for the reader.
AR comics are still a relatively new medium, and there are many exciting possibilities for how they can be used to tell stories and engage readers in new ways. As AR technology continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see more and more creators experimenting with this innovative medium.
How do you make augmented reality comics?
To create augmented reality (AR) comics, you will need to follow these general steps:
Choose a subject or theme: Start by deciding on a subject or theme for your AR comic. This can be a fictional story, a political commentary, a slice-of-life narrative, or anything else that you’d like to explore.
Design your characters: Next, you’ll need to design your characters. This can include creating visual reference sheets or models that show how your characters look and behave, as well as coming up with their personalities, backstories, and other characteristics.
Write a script: Once you have your characters and theme in place, you’ll need to write a script for your AR comic. This should include a clear outline of the story or concept that you’d like to explore, as well as the dialogue and actions of your characters.
Layout your AR comic: After you have your script written, you’ll need to lay out your AR comic. This involves deciding on the panel layout, determining the placement and size of your panels, and sketching out the rough draft of your AR comic.
Draw your AR comic: Once you have your layout finished, you can start drawing your AR comic. This can be done digitally or with traditional tools such as pencils, pens, and paper.
Add AR elements: After you have your AR comic drawn, you’ll need to add the AR elements that will enhance the reading experience. This can involve creating animation, 3D models, sounds, and other digital elements using software such as Unity and Vuforia.
Test and refine your AR comic: Before publishing your AR comic, it’s important to test it and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that the AR elements are working properly and enhancing the reading experience.
Publish your AR comic: When your AR comic is complete, you’ll need to choose a platform to publish it on.
What are the components of an augmented reality comic?
The components of an augmented reality (AR) comic can vary depending on the specific goals and creative vision of the creator. However, some common components of an AR comic might include:
Story or concept: An AR comic typically has a story or concept that it is trying to convey, whether it is a fictional narrative, a commentary on current events, or something else.
Characters: An AR comic will typically have one or more characters who are central to the story or concept being explored. These characters might be human, animal, or fictional creatures, and they might be designed in a variety of styles, ranging from realistic to stylized or cartoony.
Script: An AR comic will typically have a script that outlines the dialogue, actions, and other elements of the story or concept being explored. This script might be written in a traditional script format or in a more free-form style depending on the goals of the creator.
Art: An AR comic will typically have visual elements such as drawings, paintings, or other artwork that helps convey the story or concept being explored. This art might be created using a variety of techniques, such as traditional media, digital tools, or a combination of both.
AR elements: The most distinctive feature of an AR comic is the AR elements that are integrated into the comic. These might include animation, 3D models, sounds, or other digital elements that are triggered by specific elements within the comic and can be viewed using an AR app.
Layout: An AR comic will typically have a layout that determines the placement and size of the panels and other visual elements within the comic. This layout can be designed to enhance the storytelling and create a cohesive visual experience for the reader.
Panel progression: An AR comic will typically have a panel progression that determines the sequence of panels and how they flow together to convey the story or concept being explored. This panel progression can be designed to create a sense of momentum and engagement for the reader.
