What is World Building?
World building is the process of creating a fictional universe or setting for a story, typically in the form of a book, film, or video game. It involves designing the geography, culture, society, and politics of the world, as well as the history and backstory of the characters who live in it.
World building is an important aspect of many forms of storytelling, as it helps to create a believable and immersive environment for the story to take place in. It allows the creator to establish the rules and logic of the world, and to present a consistent and believable vision of the world to the audience.
In the process of world building, the creator may consider a wide range of factors, such as the climate and geography of the world, the cultures and societies that exist within it, the technology and resources available to the characters, and the conflicts and challenges that the characters will face. By carefully designing these elements, the creator can create a rich and detailed world that feels believable and real to the audience.
What are the elements of World building?
There are many elements that can be included in world building, and the specific elements will depend on the needs and goals of the story. Some common elements that may be included in world building include:
1. Geography: The physical layout and features of the world, including the landscapes, climates, and bodies of water.
2. Culture: The customs, beliefs, values, and traditions of the societies and groups within the world.
3. Politics: The systems of government and social organization within the world, and the relationships between different groups and nations.
4. Technology: The level of technological advancement within the world, and the ways in which technology is used by the characters.
5. Resources: The resources that are available within the world, and the ways in which they are used and traded.
6. History: The events and circumstances that have shaped the world and the characters within it.
7. Magic: If the world includes elements of fantasy or supernatural powers, the rules and limitations of these abilities may be defined.
8. Species: If the world includes multiple species or intelligent non-human creatures, their characteristics and relationships with each other may be defined.
By including these and other elements in the world building process, the creator can create a rich and believable setting for the story to take place in.
Why does world building matter?
World building is an important aspect of many forms of storytelling, as it helps to create a believable and immersive environment for the story to take place in. A well-designed world can make the characters and events of the story feel more real and believable to the audience, and can help to draw the audience into the story.
In addition to enhancing the believability and immersion of the story, world building can also help to create a sense of depth and complexity within the story. By designing the history, culture, and politics of the world, the creator can add layers of meaning and context to the events of the story, making it feel more rich and nuanced.
Finally, world building can also be a way for the creator to explore and express their own ideas and themes through the story. By designing the elements of the world, the creator can use the story as a means of commenting on or exploring real-world issues, or of expressing their own values and beliefs.
How to approach building worlds?
There are many different approaches to world building, and the specific approach will depend on the needs and goals of the story. Here are a few general steps that you might consider when building a world:
- Determine the purpose and tone of the world: What kind of story are you trying to tell, and what kind of world will best support that story? Is the world meant to be a realistic, grounded setting for a dramatic tale, or a fantastical, magical world for an epic adventure?
- Decide on the key elements of the world: What are the most important features and aspects of the world that you want to define? This might include the geography, culture, society, politics, resources, or history of the world.
- Research and gather inspiration: Look to real-world examples and sources of inspiration to help flesh out the details of your world. This might include reading about different cultures and societies, studying maps and geography, or researching the history and science of different time periods or worlds.
- Create a rough outline or map: Start to sketch out the basic layout and structure of your world. This might include creating a map, outlining the key regions and locations, or sketching out the basic political and social structure of the world.
- Fill in the details and revise as needed: As you continue to develop your world, continue to add more detail and depth to the different elements. Don’t be afraid to revise and adjust your ideas as you go along, in order to create a cohesive and believable world.
Remember that world building is an ongoing process, and it’s normal to make changes and adjustments as you continue to develop your story. The important thing is to have a clear vision of the world that you want to create, and to be willing to put in the time and effort to bring that world to life.
How to create immersion in your worlds?
Immersion is the feeling of being fully engrossed and involved in a story or game world. Here are a few ways that you can create immersion in your world:
